RE: Banal na Pag-aaral
Reverend Fathers and people of God:
I am responding to queries brought forth by some members of the clergy and lay faithful about the status of the Banal na Pag-aaral and how to relate to the members of the said group in the most pastoral and charitable way.
Please know that the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has declared in October 16, 1989 that the Banal na Pag-aaral under the chairmanship of Mrs. Salve Carreon cannot be considered a Catholic organization in good standing. This pastoral policy still stands and the Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan adopts the same position with regard to Banal na Pag-aaral.
How did the Catholic hierarchy arrive at this conclusion?
1. Based on investigations conducted by theologians and canon lawyers, there are some worship services conducted by the Banal na Pag-aaralthat are contrary to the Catholic faith; for example when Salve Carreon acts and speaks as Jesus Christ who is called Mahal na Ingkong.
2. The devotional activities in honor of Our Lady of Fatima and the midnight vigils are used as venue for Mahal na Ingkong to manifest himself in the person of Salve Carreon.
3. Through the total indwelling of the Mahal na Ingkong in Salve Carreon, Mrs. Carreon is said to become God himself thus demanding complete surrender of the BNP’s followers to the will of the Mahal na Ingkong. This doctrine and the surrender that it demands has led to the disintegration of families, financial losses and fanaticism.
We recognize that we have well-meaning and good willed members of our Catholic laity who genuinely desire to grow in Christian life and have been MISTAKEN to join the retreats and vigils of the Banal na Pag-aaral.
Such members of our Catholic laity who, after being informed of the erroneous doctrine of the Banal na Pag-aaral under the leadership of Mrs. Salve Carreon, DISSOCIATE from her and conduct prayer gatherings, catechetical retreats and night vigils WITHOUT ALLOWING the said gatherings to become the venue of the visit of Mahal na Ingkong, should be given pastoral guidance and support by every priest in the Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan.
The Banal na Pag-aaral members in the Archdiocese of Lingayen Dagupan who ABANDON all links to Mrs. Salve Carreon and REJECT EVERYTHING connected to the indwelling of Mahal na Ingkong in Mrs. Carreon may avail of the spiritual graces of the Church and use Catholic venues for their gathering including parish churches, halls and chapels.
We acknowledge that so many poor, well-meaning and good willed Catholics have been misled by the leadership of Mrs. Carreon. It is our duty as pastors of souls to snatch them from error and offer them the authentic message of the Gospel as handed down from Catholic tradition.
The aids to holiness that the Banal na Pag-aaral has given to its gullible members who honestly seek holiness should be a wake-up call for us pastors to be passionate in the mission of evangelization so that the flock entrusted to us may be protected from erroneous fanaticism now and in the future.
I trust that these guidelines will help you to respond to this delicate and complicated pastoral situation that is before us.
Sincerely yours,
+SOCRATES B. VILLEGAS
Archbishop of Lingayen Dagupan
